Ac97 driver help

I am helping a friend with a Vista Ultimate installation on a laptop and ran into a problem with the builtin soundcard. It's a Realtek AC' That is wierd. I installed vista and it updated the drivers for my Realtek audio AC97 in an instand. But it downloaded updates during the installation so References to Vista also apply to Windows 7. Only to add one thing: My laptop has the same audio device, and I'm using the driver recommended on the quoted Windows Compatibility Center site Explore - microsoft.

SYS un-handled exception error. Deleting the Realtek AC97 driver in safemode did not help as it kept being reinstalled. I will wait a few months to see if a new driver is issued.
