It is a very wrong approach to expect that an in-place upgrade will solve your existing Active Directory problems. If you have more than one DC which you should — backup all of them or at least two DC. Make sure that you have enough free space in the boot volume.
You should have at least MB available to be able to start the in-place upgrade. Open DNS management console to check that they appear. Can be that you got an error during demoting at the beginning, then uncheck the Global catalog on that DC and try again.
